What happens when professional success becomes the main source of a person’s identity and self-esteem? This B2–C1 ESL lesson plan helps adult learners explore different definitions of success and consider why losing professional status can feel deeply threatening.

Based on a short video featuring Arthur Brooks, the lesson examines professional identity, achievement, fear of failure and the emotional challenges of retirement or career change. Students also read an article presenting eight strategies for building an identity beyond work.
