Lesson Summary
What does an IQ score tell us about intelligence, and how can we develop our intellectual abilities? This B2–C1 ESL lesson plan invites mature teens and adults to explore these questions through the short video Why IQ Is Not the Same as Intelligence and the article Eight Ways to Develop Your Intellectual Abilities.
Students engage with authentic multimodal content, consider different perspectives and connect the topic to their own learning needs. The lesson combines vocabulary development with meaningful speaking, listening, viewing, reading and writing practice.

Learning Objectives
• Explore the relationship between IQ and intelligence.
• Consider approaches to intellectual development.
• Learn and use vocabulary related to intelligence and education.
• Develop comprehension, critical thinking and multimodal literacy.
• Express and support opinions through discussion, roleplay and writing.
Lesson Activities
Learners begin by discussing a quotation and sharing their views about intelligence. They predict, watch and analyse the video, answer comprehension questions and write about what they have learned. A roleplay provides further opportunities to use the new vocabulary.
An accompanying article introduces eight approaches to developing intellectual abilities. Students explore the article through comprehension questions, discussion and writing, then rank the approaches according to their current learning needs. The lesson ends with reflection and includes multimodal composition homework.
