Nice Words

Teachers from all over the world have been kind enough to give very positive feedback on the innovative and creative use of moving images in Film English. Here are some of the comments.

Thanks for your generosity. You’ll never know how many lives you have touched. Your work is treasured by my students. Your work has really inspired my students. Me too.

Chris Bohlander

Thanks so much for these detailed lesson plans. I really like that your site uses film. There’s something about moving images on a screen that keeps the attention of students much better than I can on my own! Great resource for English teachers, thank you so much.

Jon Sumner

Thank you for such a brilliant website. It is the best website that I have found for teaching English – I just love the clear, coherent way that you organise it all, but mostly it’s the content of the lesson ideas that is great. Each one makes you think. Through your website I find that, primarily, I learn things whilst planning my lessons, as each lesson plan makes you want to explore other things. And indeed, learning English can be seen as not just learning a language but learning other things IN English at the same time.

Ruth Lessells

You know how to connect with people and feelings through your own choices of film and how you focus on the opportunities that each clip can provide. In this way your work is a rich and meaningful source of inspiration both for myself and people I have had the fortune of working with. Thank you once again for so much positive energy, for caring and sharing things that I believe are important to many of us.

Fiona James

I discovered you website not that long ago. And actually I consider it to be the best ever! I wish to thank for your great work as it is an enormous help to me and probably thousands of other teachers. Each lesson is a fantastic support to my lessons. Thanks again. I’m the biggest fan of your work.

Agnieszka Banasik

I really admire your work, not only for the excellent ready-made plans you put together for the teacher in a rush, but more importantly, for the modelling and inspiration of what an excellent class can be like.

Lucy Ankle Anchor

Listening in to staffroom conversation at my teaching centre gives an indication of how much teachers make use of your lesson ideas. I also use them in teacher training sessions to show what the ingredients of a good lesson plan are.”

Ann Foreman

Your work is so consistently excellent – fun to use in the classroom and delightful for students of most any age.  We can all learn so much from your efforts, and those of us in the profession who know you and have the chance to work with you are all the better off for it.

John Bezich

Fortunately for me I stumbled across your website last week and please let me say what a pleasure it is to find such a well-organised, user-friendly, un-cluttered, interesting treasure-trove of well-thought out materials and original ideas for the classroom.

Cristina Silva

Brilliant site. Absolutely brilliant. Really, really good idea for a website. It’s great to see lesson plans that aren’t just dry exercises or grammar-based and can really get through to students of all ages.

Steve Kerr

Rarely do I find a lesson that 1) I can use without changing anything (!) and 2) is actually meaningful and thought provoking. Thank you and I look forward to using more of your work.

Erin Treece

I’ve often used your beautiful, inspiring lesson plans in my classroom, often with mixed ability students, coming from different social and cultural backgrounds and the outcome is always the same: motivated, enthusiastic learners, anticipating the next viewing event. Thank you so much for your consistent, devoted work.

Niki Nistikaki

I’ve been teaching English for more than 20 years and strongly believe that it’s impossible to teach any subject(I mean Language,History, even Maths) without teaching warm attitude towards other people – no matter how it happens. You give me (as a teacher) a great opportunity of using this film during my lessons. Thanks a lot!!! God bless you! You are really sharing not only educational but humane and positive-thinking way of teaching as well.

Tatiana Fedorova

Thank you so much for your site! For the films, you find for your lesson plans! It’s hard to find the words to describe how I feel watching them. They are not just educating stuff, but a kind of delicious award for students, that should be gained!

Elena Moilova

Absolutely brilliant… our life is full of moral dilemmas and sometimes we’re tempted to sell our souls to the devil. This reminds us how good it is to keep faithful to dignity and integrity.
Thanks so much Kieran.

Elsa Mancado

I really like your lessons and so do my students, We did the activity about bullying(new boy)and apart from being a bit shocking for them I got very interesting, revealing results when they wrote an essay about bullying.

  3. Hi Kieran…

I was visiting your website for the first time and it could not have been in a better time for me as an English teacher because I am about to open my own English school (for the second time) in the capital city of the State of Veracruz, in Mexico. Your stuff man is… well directed, easy to apply in diferent formats, for any kind of student really, regardless their age, and it´s a lot of fun!

I would like you to see something I created, I called it GRAMMARAOKEE, you can find some samples of it in Youtube, I think I´m going to do some of those lyrics games with soundtracks of popular films as I am receantly inspired by you.

    Thanks for sharing your stuff!

  5. Hi Kieran

I consider it my luck to have come across your website! That’s a wonderful way of getting through to students who are bored easily! But not through this method of yours which combine lots of things which can only lead to the development of various skills especially the critical one which can be considered greatly lacking in our youths of today! Excellent! Innovative! Thanks so much for sharing! God bless! 🙂

  6. Hello Kieran,

I would like to thank you for the wonderful and creative English teaching resource you provide. I love it!

I often use video and photos during my English sessions and your site is by far the most complete and interesting resource I have found in my 18-year career as an English trainer and teacher in France.

    Thank you and be well!

    • Hi Terry,
Thanks a lot for taking the time to commment and for your kind words about the site. I’m really happy that you find the site so useful.
      All the best,

  7. These are very powerful lessons. If my students get half as much from them as I have, it would still be huge. Thank you.

  8. Thank you so much for this. This is perfect for me. I’m an English teacher with a passion for films since I also studied it. Your blog has beautifully combined the two and I am truly inspired by you ingenuity. Cheers to you and carry on this wonderful work.

  10. Thank you so much for the wonderful resourses. I just found this website and began to use and study the site. I am interested in teaching with movies, especially American or British dramas like ‘Glee’ for English teaching and educational lessons. I also presented some papers on ‘English and movies’. So I think that this site will give more informative ideas to me. Thanks again.

  11. I really love this website! It helps me a lot with teaching. I get inspired by the work you do! My students enjoy such activities based on movies in English! Thank you a lot!!!

    thanks a lot

  14. Dear Kieran,
Thank you for taking the time to build up such wonderful and inspiring resources but also share them!
I teach French at the IB level and despite the language, there are so many fantastic resources that can be used with my students! First of all, thank you for them and secondly for me 🙂
My best to you and all the success in continuing your amazing project!

  15. Your Website is amazing, and a beatiful way of learning english.
Thank you. You remind me to begin again studying english.

  16. Hi, I just came across your site. It is overwhelming and I am not quite sure about how to make the connection with my lessons but of one thing I am sure, It will make a huge difference in my lessons! Thank you so much to all those altruistic and generous people who share their illision, knowledge and effort with others.

  17. Best. Site. Ever. My students love every lesson I give from the site. The films are thought and conversation provoking and allow students to step out of their “safety zones” when speaking in English by pushing them emotional and intellectually. As a teacher, the films are a great way to discover my students, who never cease to surprise me. Thank you for all your efforts in providing this wonderful tool to this often, “desperate” for ideas, ESL teacher. Bravo!

  18. Thank you so much for your hard work. I always try to give my students something more than an English lesson….I try to raise awareness on different issues and your selection of films does half the work for me!
You are inspiring many people all over the world!!!

  20. A gem indeed! I’m still new to this site, but I am more than a hundred percent sure that this will be very useful to me, to my students and to my kids as well.
Thank you so much! God bless you for your hard work and generosity in sharing.

  21. I really appreciate having access to your site. Honestly, I don’t even have to worry too much to prepare a class since you have considered almost everything. Thanks a lot from Cali, Colombia.

  22. THANK YOU SO MUCH! First of all many thanks from my teacher’s side and probably even more thanks from the side of my students! You do an amazing job! That’s really so! You help us to develop and become better from lesson to lesson! Keep on going! Thank you again!

  23. Dear Kieran,

thank you so much for this website. The short films you have selected teach students much more than just English. They are simply wonderful, inspiring and give food for thought. I love them for this special philosophy each of them has. Thank you for bringing them all together and giving us, teachers, the oppotunity to make our lessons a bit better!

  24. I really loved finding this website! this was what I was looking for.. I like watching films and analysing them, and the fact of making that possible with our students is amazing as we as teachers are able to learn from them, from their thoughts and deductions, whether they are kids, teenagers or adults.
Thank you a lot for the effort that is shown throw this web page!
    Regards from Argentina.

  25. This is absolutely fabulous. In today’s day and age, your method of medium is right on the money to meet and excel ESL learners. Absolutely fabulous and thank you.
    Sherrie Malisch
    Seminaire de Sherbrooke

  26. I have some English classes in which I have lunch with my students and, due to the nature of the classes the students can’t read or write, also pair work is difficult. I was struggling with these classes until I discovered this website. It really has been a lifesaver. Film-English has proved invaluable for these awkward classes and I am in your debt Kieran.

Thanks so much for your hand work.

    Jonathan Collins

  27. Just to say thanks, Kieran, for a really great website – super videos and detailed ideas for helping our students make the most of them. Thank you very much!

  28. I’ve only been on this site for about 10 minutes but it’s turning out to be a gold mine. No amount of praise or gratitude would do you justice. Keep up the great work.

  29. I have come across this site while searching Google for controversial videos as a break-the-ice start for my new English Conversation Class. It was the lesson of “The Black Hole” which brought me here. I’m very fascinated by the effort paid to make such a powerful, helpful and fantastic site. I’m an English teacher (TESOL); I have been using this site for more than 5 months. It’s awesome, I can find whatever I want. What a brilliant work. In a word: THIS SITE IS MADE TO STAY! Good Luck 🙂

  30. Thanks for sharing and creating. I have been teaching ESL for over 7 years now and I have taught business professionals as well as children and high school students of all ethnicities. I cannot tell how much I appreciate your lesson plans and the breakdowns. They aid mostly in conversation and critical thinking skills and they provide a wonderful change from the mundane grammatical lessons. The business professionals enjoyed them as did the highschool students. I always recommend your site to other teachers!

  31. What can say? I have been teaching English for a few years and I have loved this website ever since I found it. Thank you for everything. Give me more :):):)

  32. You have to know you have not only touched my heart but many students hearts in Korea. Your films and lesson plans are POWERFUL. Each film is unique and fun to watch. They are brilliant. Each lesson plan is thoughtful and really encourages me and my students to think and reflect. I have taught English for 5 years now and always have struggled to provide my students with a class that’s both fun and educational. You made it so easy! You are a true inspiration, I cannot thank you enough for doing this. Please don’t stop making differences in people all over the world 🙂

  33. Hi My grandson is very much interested in movies, he loves to break them down and compare one to one done prior with same actor or is its sequential in character. What age would you consider appropriate to follow your website and lessons?
    TY Clare

    • Hi Clare,
Thanks a lot for commenting. The lessons are intended for non-native students of English, but it sounds as if your grandson is a native speaker. I would imagine that your grandson could use a lot fo the material from about 9 or 10 years old.

  34. Being able to teach someone anything whatsoever is a blessing let alone a language, which is an invaluable resort.

Dalmiro Lopes – São Paulo – Brazil

  35. Hi, Kieran,
I’d like to congratulate you and for the activities you prepare. I love using short videos and films in my classes but it is sometimes difficult to find good ones. I’ve been using yours for about 2 years now and my students just love them!!!
    Thank you for sharing them!!!

  36. Your work here is so very very much appreciated. I purchased your book to learn more and to help keep this site free. Education for all !!!

  37. Thank you for the great lesson plans. My students enjoyed watching and discussing theses films. Is there a way to use it with beginner ESL students? I think it required a certain amount of language proficiency to be able to discuss these topics. What do you think?

  38. What a beautiful website and a Godsend! I was just wondering how to breath fresh air into my classes. This is wonderful thank you

  39. Hi Kieran,

So much effort and generosity must go along with creating and maintaining this website. I’m a young teacher, and your approach to teaching (i.e. the enthusiastic reactions of my students to these lessons) really inspires me to become the best I can.

    Thank you very much!

  40. Thank you for making all of these amazing lessons available! Your students are very lucky to have such a creative teacher and we are very lucky that you have been kind enough to share these!

I love teaching these lessons and always find them so interesting and fun.

    Best wishes from South Africa,

  41. Dear Kieran,

I am so elated to have found your website!!!Your choices are so hard-hitting, genuine, motivating, inspirational…I could add an endless list of adjectives. Since I have come across your site I cannot wait to get up early in the mornings to prepare the classes, to indulge myself with a good boost of deep cinema and to transmit it to my students. Thank you so much indeed and keep on doing this please!!! Big hug from Spain

    • Dear Natacha,

Thanks a lot for taking the time to comment and for your kind words. I’m really happy that you find the lessons so motivating and inspiring.

      All the best,

  42. Kieran, I can’t thank you enough for your wonderful website, I have been teaching English in UK for a year in preparation for a move abroad (I was previously teaching French and Spanish in UK state schools but switched to EFL and love it!) your lesson plans are so well presented and the students love them (so do I). I’ve now moved to Gran Canaria and plan to use many of the great lessons on your website. I’ve also bought your brilliant book Film English, it’s a vital part of my teacher tool kit.
My new school likes to follow a text book, something I’m not too keen on, so to be able to follow the same topics, grammar points etc in a much more fun but equally, if not more so, educational manner is just perfect.
Thank you so very much again.

    • Hi Lorna,

Thanks so much for commenting sand for your kind words which I really appreciate. I’m very happy to know that the lessons help you with your teaching and that your students enjoy them too.

      All the best,

  43. HI, I just ordered your book. This is a great website. I recently received my TESOL certificate and currently teach English online.

I am working on how to adapt the lesson plans to 1-1 online lessons. I’m hoping the book may give me more insight on how to do this.

Thanks again for this wonderful resource.

  44. I work for a small school in Karachi, Pakistan. Your lesson plans are very well designed, creative and fun to teach.

I had to show the video “The Other Pair” to my students of grades 6th and 7th. Luckily I found this website. I followed the instructions on the plan and the outcome was just amazing. Thank you for helping me out. I will definitely implement more of your plans. It was fun teaching!
