5 Things large

This EFL lesson plan is designed around a short video by Susan Weinschenk and the themes of giving presentations and success in life. Students talk about what makes a good presentation, watch a video on being a good presenter, summarise the key points of a video, talk about the secrets of success and watch a presentation.

I would ask all teachers who use Film English to consider buying my book Film in Action as the royalties which I receive from sales help to keep the website completely free.

Step 1

Pair the students and ask them to discuss the following question:

How do you feel when you have to speak in public?

Step 2

Get feedback from the students.

Step 3

Ask the learners to write down five things they think a presenter should do to make sure that their presentation is a success.

Step 4

Get feedback from the whole class and write up some of the recommendations.

Step 5

Tell the students they are going to watch a short animated video 5 Things Every Presenter Needs to Know about People. Ask the learners what they think they will see and hear in the video.

Step 6

Give the learners the 5 Things Every Presenter Needs to Know poster in which they see some of the drawings from the video. Put them into small groups and tell them their task is to reconstruct the voice-over of the video. In other words, they have to imagine they are the narrator of the video and with the help of the images construct a voice-over for the video. Set a time limit of 10 minutes. Monitor and help with vocabulary and expressions.

Step 7

When the learners have finished their voice-overs, they should practise them in their groups.

Step 8

Now invite one group to the front of the class. Play the video with no sound while the students provide their voice-over. Follow the same procedure with the other groups.

Step 9

Now show the video with sound and ask the learners to compare their voice-overs with the original.

Step 10

Tell the learners they are going to watch the video again; their task is to make brief notes to summarise each of the 5 things presenters need to know. Show the film.

Step 11

Get feedback. Give the students the summary of the video, go through the five things and discuss each one.

Step 12

Tell the learners they are going to watch a video of what many people consider to be a very good presentation. The presentation is titled 8 Secrets of Success. Ask the learners what they think are the keys to success in life.

Step 13

As the students watch their task is to consider two questions:

  • Is the presenter good?
  • What are the 8 secrets of success.

Show the film.

Step 14
Get feedback on the two questions.

Ask the learners to prepare a presentation on a topic which interests them. They should try to incorporate the advice given in the 5 Things Every Presenter Needs to Know video. Students give their presentations and you give feedback on them.

I hope you enjoy this ESL lesson.

  1. Thank you so much for your extraordinary work. I have started to use the materials provided and it really works! Me and my students are all very happy with it! I have something to suggest: I think it would be useful to give also a wordlist for each topic, so that teachers and students can improve their vocabulary related to every specific theme.
    Grazie mille! 😉
