I would ask all teachers who use Film English to consider buying my book Film in Action as the royalties which I receive from sales help to keep the website completely free.

Step 1

Write the following expressions on the board:

meet your partner’s parents

start secondary school/university

start a new job

go abroad

see a younger brother or sister/child

ride a bike

sing karaoke

swim in the sea

speak a foreign language

Step 2

Go through the expressions and make sure the students understand them.

Step 3

Ask the students to choose five of the things they have done and to think about how they felt when they did them for the first time. Alternatively, if the experiences you give don’t appeal to them, allow them to choose five that they do like.

Step 4

Tell them to write five sentences to describe how they felt the first time they did each thing. If necessary give them an example such as: “The first time I saw my daughter I felt so excited and delighted, I’ll never forget that moment. It was the best feeling in the world.”

Set a time limit of ten minutes. Walk around the classroom helping the students with language as necessary.

Step 5

Ask the learners to read their sentences to a partner and tell them about their emotions the first time they did the things.

Step 6

Hold a plenary session discussing how the students felt in each situation.

Step 7

Now ask the students if they can remember how they felt when they fell in love for the first time. Write up any interesting words and expressions the students come up with.

Step 8

Ask the students how they feel when they kiss a person for the first time. Write up interesting words and expressions on the board.

Step 9

Ask the students if they have seen any viral video recently, and if so to tell the rest of the class about them. Ask them why videos go viral, and what makes a good viral video.

Tell the students they are going to watch a short film which went viral titled First Kiss in which strangers are filmed kissing each other for the first time. As they watch, the student should notice what emotions the people feel.

Step 10

Show the film.

Step 11

Get feedback from the students on the emotions they think the people in the film felt.

Step 12

Ask the students how they film made them feel and if they liked it.

Step 13

Tell the learners that the video is in fact a commercial for Wren, a clothing company and that the majority of the people are professional actors, singers and models.

Step 14

Ask them the following questions:

Do you still feel the same about the film?

Do you feel manipulated?

Do you think the film is immoral?

Step 15

Tell the learners they are now going to watch a short video in which real strangers are asked to kiss. As they watch they should think about how the reactions of the people in this video are different from those of the people in the first film.

Show the film.

Step 16

Get feedback from the students and discuss the reactions of the people in the two videos.

Homework

I hope you enjoy the lesson.

  2. It is a very interestingly planned lesson. However,I doubt it’s acceptance in an orthodox environment as mine. Using a kissing scene as a teaching resource may create more problems than benefits. I will use the lesson plan but, with another safer topic like bungee jumping or trying a new cuisine..

  3. I’d prefer teaching children that a kiss is something intimate that should be shared only with a person who deserves it. The fact that a video is viral says absolutely nothing about the quality of the messages it coveys.

  4. I really liked this lesson plan, I think it’s really rich.
I’m also looking forward to meeting you in Portugal at the Appi conference as I’ve already seen your name in the programme.I’m a fan of you work!

    • Hi Elsa,
Great to hear from you. I’m really looking forward to the APPI Conference; I used to live in Oporto and still have friends there. I’m looking forward to meeting you too 🙂
      All the best,
      Kieran

  5. Hi Kieran,

My class loved your lesson! Some found it a little uncomfortable as I teach a diverse group, however, I think it’s always good to challenge students. As a follow up task we made our own first video:

Hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it.

Thanks for all your great work!

  6. hi. this is Maryam. I am from Iran. Thank u for your lesson. I’m MA student. I want to do a research on effect of using subtitled movies and willingness to communicate but I don’t access to any movie with subtitle. Would you mind please introducing me some films and say how can I get them?
