Help Keep Film English Free

ELTONS 2013 - 4581

Film English has been running for almost four years now, and it’s become more popular and successful than I could ever have imagined in my wildest dreams. Over 80,000 teachers a month use the resources on the site, and it’s received numerous including a British Council ELTons award for Innovation in Teacher Resources and the MEDEA Award for User-Generated Educational Media, the most important media and education award in Europe.

All of this is great, I love creating the lessons and helping other teachers without charging a subscription fee. However, I spend a lot of time making the lesson plans, and I have many costs such as web and graphic design and hosting. The donations I ask for to maintain the site, don’t cover my expenses. I may have to consider charging for the resources unless I can cover my costs.

So if you use the resources and find them stimulating, please consider a modest donation — however much you can afford. If you can’t afford a donation yourself, ask the director of studies or owner of your school to consider the school making a donation. If the resources are helping you with your teaching, they’re also helping students with their learning so the school wins as well.

    • Hi Keiran,
I’m trying to make a donation from Girona but can’t as one needs to add a county in England in order for the payment to go through! Any account number where money can be transferred directly? Help!
Film English has saved me a fortune on photocopies, time and energy so more than happy to donate!
Please let me know how to get round this problem.
      Thanks,
      Ellen.

      • Hi Ellen,
Thanks for pointing this out. other people in Spain have had the same problem. I’m trying to sort it out with PayPal, but they haven’t solved the problem yet. I hope to have it resolved soon and then I’ll let yuo know how you can donate. Thanks alot for the support.
        All the best,
        Kieran

  1. I would be very happy to make a donation – your work is wonderful and very inspiring. My only problem is I don’t use paypal. Can you give me another method of payment?

  2. I think it’s fair to ask for donnations for all that nice work. I’ll check how things work with paypal…

  3. I love this website! Thank you so much for finding such amazing little films, and for keeping it up. I used My Shoes for a unit with my Spanish I classes, and they got a lot out of it.

  4. I’m most happy to leave a small donation which I hope to repeat again soon. I think a small donation is a small price to pay for a great website, fantastic resources & ideas and some very hard work on your side. I, for one, have used numerous video clips that you have posted on your site. Thanks once again for this brilliant website! A hard working teacher in Greece is forever grateful!!!

  6. Great job, this. Your contribution to making teaching and learning fun and easy for teachers and students is worthy of commendation. The Saving Grace videos were great because they encourage learners to do active listening. I’ve just left a token donation which I hope to repeat a few more times.

  7. Hi Kieran,

I travelled to the IH Barcelona conference in February just to hear you speak, and it was great. Thank you. I will be making a donation soon.

Have you thought about making a tiered system, so that some resources are available for free, but most require a modest subscription, say 5-10 euros a year? I don’t know how that programming would work, but I think most people would pay to access the content.

    • Hi Brandon,
Thanks a lot for getting in touch and for the suggestion. I’d prefer to try to keep Film English free as I know there area lot of teachers out there who simply can’t afford to pay anything. However, I’m going to encourage owners of schools and directors of studies, and those teachers who can afford it, to make a monthly subscription payment. Thanks for the support. Hope you come to the IH Conference in Barcelona next year 🙂
      All the best,
      Kieran

  9. Hey, like other users, have tried to donate but can’t from Spain as they ask me for my county and only give the British counties to choose from and I don’t have a pay pal account. Can you figure out a way for us to make donations from abroad? I personally wouldn’t mind paying a (reasonable) subscription every year as I really depend on your classes and am very grateful for the time you put into this. Thanks a million, Kieran!

    • Hi Eavan,

  10. Hi kieran,
I am trying to make a donation from Madrid but the system only gives the option of British counties so it doesn’t get through
Could you please give me an alternative? I think your resources are brilliant and inspiring and I really would like to contribute with a donation
    Thanks a lot

  11. Kieran, this is a completely wonderful site. I love using these films because of the messages, they’re thought-provoking and I can match them to the mood of my students. I love that I can do paperless lessons, that conversation is on meaningful topics, that my students feel there is a little surprise waiting for them in each lesson. Thank you for your work, I will be happily donating as if it were a monthly Subscription when Paypal is up (am trying to sort that out. Congratulations, Lucy
